Mission/Vision

History of the hospital

The Hospital was established in 1930 by the Dutch Reformed Christian Mission (DRCM) of South Africa to cater for the health needs of the inmates of the then Benue Leprosy Settlement (BLS). The ownership has since changed hands twice as it was handed over to the Sudan United Mission/Christian Reformed Churches (SUM/CRC) of North America in 1957 because of the apartheid policy in South Africa, and finally to the NKST or Universal Reformed Christian Church in1985 till date.

The Hospital has expanded its scope of services to include Orthopaedic (Surgery, Physiotherapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Clubfoot Clinic and Nursing services) and other Medical services. The Hospital also offers other rehabilitative services such as Community Rehabilitation, Out-reach/Mission.

Our Activities

Preparation and conduct of quality and affordable surgeries for patients with trauma and orthopaedic conditions , Preventive and Rehabilitative Surgeries (PRS) for People Affected by Leprosy (PAL), polio, cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions.

Open reduction and internal fixation, external fixation and conservative management of fractures.

Medical Department

We provide consultation of patients, assessment and management of patients with clubfoot using Ponseti method of manipulation and casting with tenotomy.

Our Activities

Provision of excellent physiotherapy services for patients with low back pain, cervical and lumbar spondylosis, prolapsed inter-vertebral disc and other arthritic conditions of the spine.

Rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions e.g stroke, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy etc.

Collaboration with other medical rehabilitation team professionals in rendering a multidisciplinary care to patients

What is ClubFoot?

Clubfoot is a deformity that turns the foot downward and inward, making walking difficult or impossible. It is also called talipes equinovarus deformity.
It may be from birth (congenital) or may result from some other pre-existing condition like poliomyelitis, cerebral palsy, injection palsy, arthrogryposis, myelomeningocoele or trauma.

We Treat Clubfoot Using Ponseti Method:

Treatment is started 7 to 10 days after birth.
Involves weekly manipulation and application of POP, to maintain the correction achieved, usually for 6 to 8 weeks in case of early presentation.
For many children a minor surgery, tenotomy is required to lengthen the Achilles tendon after which a final cast is applied and left in place for 3 weeks.
After full correction, the corrected position is maintained with a foot abduction brace (sometimes called �boots and bars�).

What is ClubFoot?
